On September 12, 2014, Tianjin University (TJU) welcomed a delegation from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) led by its President, Professor Sung-Mo Kang, who was attending the Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2014 in Tianjin. President Li Jiajun held a meeting with the guests, which could be regarded as a high-level dialogue between “the first university in China” and “the rising star of South Korean universities”. Yu Xiaofang, Dean of TJU’s School of Life Sciences, and representatives from the Office of International Cooperation, were present at the meeting.

During the meeting, President Li gave an overview of TJU and the construction of its new campus. He emphasized that, despite its history of only 40 years, KAIST had developed into a leading university in South Korea, Asia and even the world, whose experience had a great enlightenment for Chinese universities. In addition, he said, since the two countries were geographical neighbors and shared a lot in common, the two universities enjoyed a better potential for cooperation in various fields including life sciences, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electronic information engineering, materials science, precision instrument and environmental science. Sung-Mo Kang said he was very glad to have come to TJU, the first university in China. After visiting the TJU History Museum, he gained a deeper understanding of TJU’s historical development and consequently he hoped to further promote the cooperation in talent training and scientific research between both universities. Afterwards, the two presidents held in-depth discussions about the admission of students, innovation of teaching mode and cooperation with enterprises.

Sung-Mo Kang also visited the teaching and research facilities of the School of Life Sciences and exchanged ideas with Dean Yu Xiaofang.
